Without Resurrection, No Christianity

Easter 2009 Reflection
(Shared at FCCBC Easter Sunday Celebration, April 12, 2009)

For the followers of Jesus, the betrayal, crucifixion, and death of Christ happened so fast that it was far beyond their ability to ever imagine what would happen next to them. But the empty tomb changed everything … and my friend, it still does!
As present day believers we often find ourselves so caught up in the grind of everyday life that our prayers begin and end in our daily circumstances. It is interesting to examine the prayers of the Apostle Paul: “And what is the exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe, according to the workings of His mighty power, which He wrought in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead” (Ephesians 1:19,20).

He prayed that the saints would have a fuller knowledge of Christ according to the revelation of the Mystery. And that the eyes of their understanding might be opened to what is the hope of our calling. Thus, Paul prayed that we might comprehend the greatness of His power and the proper application essential to live a godly life in Christ Jesus. And this would enable us to walk worthy of the calling, unshaken by unforeseen circumstances.

Remember the Read Sea crossing! The Psalmist writes: “Nevertheless He saved them for His name’s sake, that He might make His mighty power to be known. He rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up; so He led them through the depths, as through the wilderness . . . and the waters covered their enemies, there was not one of them left.” Psalms 106:8-11. It is a timeless story told again and again through the generations.

Today God has revealed His power in a much different way. Paul shifts the emphasis from Sea Episode to an even more glorious miraculous manifestation – the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Between the Lord’s death and His bodily resurrection stood the power of sin, the power of death, the power of Hades, the power of darkness and the prince of the power of the air in whom resided the control of these dominions.

That Friday when Christ died the powers of darkness were convinced they had overthrown the plans and purposes of God in regard to redemption.

But Sunday is coming!

But just when all hope seemed to be lost, Christ arose!
The bars of death could not hold Him.
His bodily resurrection is the one indisputable fact,
Beyond reasonable doubt,
Objective verifiable evidence, that Christ triumphed over sin and death –
the Finished Work of Jesus.
The Resurrection provides us the opportunity to start over, no matter what our circumstances may be. The cross gave us the ability to be above our circumstances and not under our circumstances.
The Resurrection demonstrates that God is sovereign over our circumstances … that he is both the architect and the builder of our future. “The Cross of Jesus stands at the intersection of eternity and our world.
Without resurrection there is no Church today, no Holy Spirit, faith is nothing. God raised Jesus from the dead is the best explanation. John 11:25-26
Armed with knowledge of the “exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believes,” we are equipped to triumph over sin and death.

That is what Easter is about …That is what Resurrection is about . . . That is what the Empty Cross; the Empty Tomb is about . . . The Finished Work of our Lord Jesus Christ
Everyday is resurrection!
To give us new beginnings and hope reborn!
